The 10 dollar banknote from the Bank of Augusta, unissued, dating from the period 1850-1865, is an example of the fiduciary production of the time in the United States. This banknote, originating from the State of Georgia, testifies to the private banking system in force before the standardization of the national currency.
The obverse of the banknote features a bust of a man on the left. In the center, an allegorical scene depicts a woman symbolizing commerce. This figure is framed by a ship on the left and a train on the right, representing the means of transport and economic development of the time. On the far right, a circle adorns the banknote, in which there is a seated man holding a book.
The following inscriptions appear on the banknote: "10 STATE OF GEORGIA 10", indicating the face value and the issuing State. One can also read "The President Directors & Co of THE Bank of Augusta Promise to pay Twenty Dollars on demand to _____ or bearer. AUGUSTA,______18_____ TEN ___________ Cash. ___________ President. XX". These mentions attest to the bank's commitment to pay the amount indicated to the bearer on demand.
The name of the printer, "Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New York", also appears on the banknote, testifying to the company responsible for its manufacture. The reverse of the banknote is UNIFACE, that is to say that it does not include any printing. The dimensions of the banknote are 180 × 76 mm.
