This 2-dollar banknote was issued by the Sussex Bank, located in Newton, New Jersey, during the 19th century. The period of issuance is between 1818 and 1865, when the bank was renamed Sussex National Bank of Newton.
The banknote, printed in black and white, has a rectangular format with dimensions of 188 mm in length and 78 mm in width. The iconography of the banknote includes a central vignette representing Commerce and Prosperity. These allegorical figures hold a large shield adorned with a train and surmounted by an eagle, symbolizing progress and economic development. Attributes of Ceres, goddess of agriculture, are also present, evoking fertility and abundant harvests. The figure of Hope is also represented, adding a dimension of optimism and confidence in the future.
In the lower right corner of the banknote, a representation of Liberty, in the form of a reclining figure, is visible. It rests on a number "2", indicating the face value of the banknote. A security element is integrated into the design, with the word "TWO" printed in gray inside a complex decorative pattern, aimed at preventing counterfeiting.
The entire banknote reflects the aesthetic conventions and symbols of the time, combining allegorical elements and ornamental motifs to communicate values of prosperity, progress, and freedom.
