This 2-dollar banknote was issued by the Sussex Bank, located in Newton, New Jersey, during the 19th century. The period of issuance is between 1818 and 1865, when the bank was renamed Sussex National Bank of Newton.

The banknote, printed in black and white, has a rectangular format with dimensions of 188 mm in length and 78 mm in width. The iconography of the banknote includes a central vignette representing Commerce and Prosperity. These allegorical figures hold a large shield adorned with a train and surmounted by an eagle, symbolizing progress and economic development. Attributes of Ceres, goddess of agriculture, are also present, evoking fertility and abundant harvests.
