The 10 Francs Mathieu coin, minted in 1981, is a commemorative coin issued by France. It is composed of an alloy of copper, aluminum, and nickel. Its diameter is 26 millimeters.
The obverse of the coin features a stylized map of France, radiating from the center, where the capital letters "RF" are intertwined. The legend "REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" is inscribed in an arc above the map. The name "MATHIEU" also appears on the obverse, indicating the name of the engraver, Georges Mathieu.
The reverse of the coin depicts stylized forms evoking industrial France. Elements such as cranes, pylons, and buildings can be distinguished. The face value "10 FRANCS" is inscribed on the reverse.
The edge of the coin bears the incuse inscription "LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE", separated by symbols: a laurel branch, an olive branch, and an ear of wheat. There are two edge variants for this type of coin: type A, where the edge is readable when the map of France is facing up, and type B, where the edge is readable when the face value is facing up.
This coin was issued as part of a Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) set.
