Netherlands. Enamelled peace badge ca. 1913-1915. "Blessed are the peacemakers" – Vredespaleis / Peace Palace
Obverse:
Enamelled, pointed oval badge with white cross on gold ground. In the arms of the cross: "ZALIG ZIJN DE VREEDZAMEN" (Dutch for "Blessed are the peacemakers"). In blue enamel around: "MEDEARBEIDER TOT HET VREDESPALEIS" (“Co-worker for the Peace Palace”).
Reverse:
Plain gilt surface. Small letter "K" at top of suspension loop.
Historical context:
This Dutch peace badge was issued around the time of the opening of the Peace Palace (Vredespaleis) in The Hague in 1913. The building, established to house the Permanent Court of Arbitration, was funded through international donations, including by American industrialist Andrew Carnegie. The badge honours supporters and contributors to the peace movement and features a biblical phrase from the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:9), promoting ideals of reconciliation and international law.
