Laurens Jansz. Coster – Monument in Haarlem, 1856
Obverse: Statue of Laurens Jansz. Coster standing on pedestal. Around: "TYPOGRAPHIAE PATER / DE ORBE MERUIT PATRIA POSUIT". Signed: "S. G. ELION F.".
Reverse: Radiant sky with sunrays breaking through clouds. Four-line inscription:
"DISPULSIS NEBULIS / FULGET / ILLUSTRIOR / HARLEM. 1856".
Historical Context:
This medal was struck in 1856 to commemorate the erection of the statue of Laurens Jansz. Coster (c.1370–c.1440) in Haarlem. Coster was long celebrated in the Netherlands as the inventor of printing, a claim competing with that of Johannes Gutenberg. The radiant reverse with its Latin legend (“With the clouds dispelled, it shines more brightly”) symbolizes the triumph of knowledge through the art of printing.
