1869 Netherlands – Silver Medal for the International Exhibition in Amsterdam | Promoting Dutch Industry and Handicraft
Obverse:
Seated allegorical female figure representing Industry. She feeds a laurel wreath into a forging anvil, symbolising productive honour. At her side:
A gear wheel, tools and a chest, referencing mechanical manufacturing;
Her left hand rests on a shield with the Dutch lion (coat of arms).
Around the edge:
"VEREENIGING TER BEVORDERING VAN FABRIEK EN HANDW. NIJVERHEID IN NEDERLAND."

This elegant silver medal was awarded in conjunction with the Internationale Tentoonstelling (International Exhibition) held in Amsterdam in 1869, organised under the auspices of the Vereeniging ter Bevordering van Fabriek- en Handwerknijverheid – an early industrial society promoting craftsmanship and innovation in the Netherlands.
The exhibition gathered manufacturers, inventors, and craftsmen from across Europe, showcasing technological progress and artisanal excellence. The allegorical figure on the obverse illustrates the ideal of combining tradition (shield, wreath) with modernity (machinery, tools) in national development. The recipient’s name was meant to be engraved within the central laurel frame, but this specimen remains in mint, unawarded condition.
